A BRIEF INTERLUDE ABOUT FAMILY HISTORY!

While we were at the Foster Botanical Garden in Honolulu (more on that in this entry), I came across this replica of the Great Buddha in Kamakura and thought it was interesting.

The statue was built to commemorate 100 years of Japanese immigration to Hawaii. My family actually immigrated to Hawaii from Japan originally so that’s kind of a cool connection. (Too bad they didn’t stay — I’ll take Hawaiian weather over Canadian weather.)

I found this online — my great-grandmother came to Honolulu from Japan. I’m named after her!

It’s fun coming across a bit of family history while travelling. I never met my great-grandparents (they died before I was born) so I liked knowing they existed in the same place I was, 100 years earlier.
